Evidence-Based Wellness Programs

Ross Norton Recreation Complex is honored to host Evidence-Based programs that offer proven ways through defined research to promote wellness and manage or reduce health concerns and/or falls. Class size is limited. Pre-registration is required. Classes are free to participants. 

Enhance® Fitness

In partnership with the YMCA of the Suncoast, Ross Norton offers this Evidence-Based group exercise program that uses simple, easy-to-learn movements that motivate individuals (particularly those with arthritis) to stay active. Each session includes cardiovascular, strength training, balance and flexibility exercises. Provided by Pinellas County Social Action funding. One hour class held three times weekly for 16 weeks. Participants must be age 65 or older. Classes are free to participants. 

SilverSneakers® Cardio Fit Class                                                                                                      

Increase cardiovascular strength and muscular endurance.

  • Free for SilverSneakers® members
  • $4 (with rec card) | $5 (without card) per class
  • FREE EVENTS: Tuesday, April 4 and 11, 1 to 1:45 p.m. Refreshments and door prizes available. Get more information by calling 727-462-6025

Free Bike Club

                                                                                                        

  • The Coastal Brake Club
  • Every Tuesday, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Enjoy easy rides of no more than six miles to several scenic destinations. Riders will leave from Ross Norton Recreation Complex at Lake Belleview. Bring a water bottle and spare tube.

 

 Free Walking Club

  • Every Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.
  • Walk at your own pace. Improve your physical and mental well-being while walking the scenic one-mile loop around Lake Belleview. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Bring a water bottle. 

 

TAI CHI: Moving for Better Balance 

An evidence-based program consisting of eight single forms in the program derived from the traditional, 24-Form Yang Style Tai Chi but tailored to adults who have concerns about falling and wish to improve balance and mobility. Class is currently full. Call for information about future classes and to be added to an ‘interest list’.  Pre-registration required. Participants must be age 60 or older.  Free.

Wellbeing and Eastern Modalities Series:

  • Increasing Happiness through Gratitude - Tuesday, May 2, 1 - 2 p.m.  

    Research shows that you can achieve greater happiness by developing your sense of gratitude. By following simple practices as little as once a week, you can increase your vitality, improve relationships and become more optimistic. Free.   • Chakras - Thursday, May 11, 10 - 11:30 a.m.

  • Reiki Circle - Tuesday, May 23, 1 - 2 p.m.

 Explore the benefits of this alternative healing practice developed by a Buddhist monk.  Feel a greater sense of peace, calm and connectedness as Reiki practitioners tap universal life energy and enhance the ability of participants to increase their sense of wellbeing.  Free. Arts/Crafts:  Ceramic Tile Painting with Inks – Tuesday, May 9, 11 a.m.  – 1 p.m.

Explore this beautiful craft and create free-form colorful paintings on ceramic tiles.  Beginner and advanced students are welcome in this easy-to-learn craft.  Materials are included.  Artworks will be returned following treatment with heat-resistant sealant. $16 (w/ rec card or SilverSneakers) / $18 (w/o rec card). Tai Chi Sunset by the Lake – Wednesday, May 24, 7:30 – 8 p.m.

Improve your mood and reduce stress while you experience this ancient and meditative exercise at the shore of Lake Belleview. In the event of rain, classes will be held indoors,

SHINE Medicare/Medicaid INSURANCE COUNSELING

Shine volunteers offer unbiased insurance counseling on Medicare/Medicaid, prescriptions and long-term care insurance. Pre-registration required. Call for appointment. Free.
